I saw Avenue Q with my roomies a couple days ago. Be jealous. I had heard great stuff about it since back in high school, but I never actually had the chance to see it. Now, thanks to the ingenuity of “Student Rush” and not caring about waiting in line for an hour, we got to see it for $25 (and with good seats!). I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. Honestly. Well this semester has been hell, so laughing is hard to do- but that is irrelevant to the point.
I’d have to say the topĀ songs are probably the ones that you have heard of before: “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist”, “The Internet is for Porn”, “It Sucks to be Me”, “If You Were Gay”, and “You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You’re Makin’ Love)”. I mean, I loved all of them really. Still, the parts that definitely got me rolling on the floor laughing were the hilarious “Bad Idea Bears” that ruin your life right when you least expect it, the copious and also creative use of naked puppets doin’ the dirty deed, and of course all the blatant racism that keeps you giggling while feeling like a terrible human being. What I also found surprising is how the performers also make an effort to act and look interesting while acting through their puppets. It was fun to watch a puppet’s reaction and then see its human counterpart mimic the expression. I urge everyone with an open mind, a sharp tongue, and a certain disregard for profanity to see Avenue Q. It was the most fun I’ve had at the theater to date. Mind you, I absolutely loved Wicked, but this is a totally different kind of fun.
