Let’s Talk About Matt Smith

Fab. Alright, in my last Doctor Who post, I went into a fit about Matt Smith’s season 5 promo. At this point I have to take a moment to rescind my hate towards the man. Yes…I’m apologizing (run for the hills). I decided not to comment about his take on The Doctor until I saw season 5 in its entirety.

Now that I have, I can honestly say that Matt Smith is a great Doctor. Maybe not the best or the most memorable (yet), but certainly pretty damn awesome. He makes me laugh, he makes me blush, and at times he even makes me drool (in that towel, anyone?). But I guess what’s missing is the depth. Y’know, that “bleargh I’m destined to be alone”/”Why does everyone I care about have to leave” kind of depth. Smith’s Doctor is silly and giddy and childish. Sure it’s fun to watch, but I miss those old episodes that really hit me in the gut with emotion. Moffat is doing a great job, but it feels like a whole new show. I mean, that’s not bad. It’s just not earth shattering like it used to be.

Of course there is the exception of the Van Gogh episode which made me bawl like the good ol’ days. Still, I think the best one of this season was The Lodger in which The Doctor gets to act all human and stuff (and prances about in a towwweeellll). There was a definite lack of “bad guy” in the episode, though. Unless you want to count the stairs that don’t REALLY exist. I don’t know why I’m having such trouble explaining it. Season 5 had its good moments, but I didn’t have anything to cheer for. It was so “blah”. There’s nothing The Doctor is looking forward to (or running from), the relationship between The Doctor and Amy is undefined (does she like him or not?), and Amy didn’t seem to like Rory that much either. Oh Rory. Poor kid. I was so let down that they actually got married. I kept thinking he deserved better.

Underwhelmed would be a good word to describe this. But Matt did exceed my expectations. Here’s looking to season 6!

The Eleventh Doctor (mixed feelings, anyone?)

I’m cutting myself off on this one since I have a tendency to rant whenever I hear the words Matt Smith (or his big forehead). Skipping to the end: BBC has the new teaser for the 5th season of Doctor Who up- and while there is a little too much intimacy for my liking, it’s not that bad. When the Daleks will give out? No one knows. Someone must be getting a dollar every time they show up on-screen because it’s getting mildly ridiculous how much they’ve turned into the ‘fall back bad guy’.

Oh and I don’t know how I feel about the new logo design yet. I mean, I wasn’t a giant fan of the Eye of Sauron logo either… so anything is an improvement. Squee!
