Surprise! Since I’m feeling particularly frazzled, I’m going to allow you a rare glimpse into my real life. Excited? I am too! Currently I’m writing a spec script for my TV Comedy Writing workshop. I’d tell you what show it was for…but then I wouldn’t be the enigma that I am. So, I’ve been “in the zone” for the past three hours. What does this look like? How does a screenwriter do their thing? Maybe after reading this you’ll find out why so many TV shows are as weird as they are.
The setting: My apartment. My room. My bed. I have no desk (remember, poor college kid?), so I’m camped on my double with about three stacks of rewrites from the entire semester. Beside my nest of pillows lie my external hard drive, a $5 bill, my Nintendo DS (I get distracted easily), notebooks, and brain food.
The brain food: What keeps me fresh and witty? Cool Whip and Pepperidge Farm chocolate chip cookies. Oh and lots of Sweet Tea. I kid you not. Right now my mom is screaming at the top of her lungs back home. For what has she taught me? Empty calories at night? Surely not!
The music: My awesome stimulating-but-not-distracting playlist entitled “Frankie and Bobby”. That’d be Messrs. Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin. They help my creative juices flow and also provide a great break moment when I need it. Yes, that includes dancing on the bed for all of “Lazy River” when my bum finally gets numb.
The outfit: Gotta be comfortable but can’t be in pajamas (then I’d get sleepy!) so it’s down to the girly stretchy pants (I have no idea what they’re called) and my ex-boyfriend’s sweater. I know what you’re thinking and all I have to say is that no, I didn’t steal it and yes, he knows I still have it. What can I say, it’s ridiculously comfortable!
Can you picture it? Does it make sense? I hope not, then I’d be giving away my secret. There’s a purple highlighter in my hair and a pen in my mouth. I’m pouring over notes and glaring at Final Draft on my mac. [Product placement alert!] Has anything been rewritten yet? Possibly. Maybe. No.
